Día Universal del Niño

Cada año millones de personas se ven forzadas a abandonar sus hogares debido a desastres naturales, conflictos armados, pobreza y desigualdad y persecución religiosa o política, entre otras. En 2017, la población total de desplazados alcanzó los 68,5 millones de personas, una cifra superior a la población de España y Portugal juntas

Hace medio año, los canales informativos hablaban de una tal comunidad minoritaria llamada Rohingya que huía de su país hacia Bangladesh por persecuciones y violencia étnica. Tras colapsar los medios con imágenes e historias sobre la situación durante unas semanas, la crisis de los Rohingya, como muchas otras, ha quedado en el olvido. Hoy, más de 700,000 Rohingyas se refugian en Bangladesh y desde entonces más de 300.000 niños no tienen acceso a educación, tan solo el 30% recibe dos horas de clase al día. Este hecho, convierte a los Rohingya en una generación perdida.

No solo durante los conflictos o desastres la educación es interrumpida, sino que debido al desplazamiento se estima un promedio de 3 a 4 años sin que el niño sea escolarizado. Mientras que las poblaciones afectadas por un desastre suelen ser recolocadas, el promedio de estancia en un campo de refugiados es de 17 años, donde la educación es escasa, tan solo el 50% de niños refugiados, bajo el cuidado de ACNUR, van a la escuela primaria.

Kenia es un país con constantes migraciones internas debido a las inundaciones y sequías que afectan a millones de personas, además tiene el segundo campo de refugiados más grande del mundo, tras Bangladesh. EveryWhere Schools tuvo la oportunidad de visitar el departamento educativo de ACNUR-Kenia en Nairobi y entender el motivo de la falta educativa en los campos de refugiados. La respuesta, la falta de recursos económicos y la escasez de interés de la educación en emergencias, y es que tan solo se destina un 2% del total de la ayuda humanitaria a la educación en situaciones de emergencia.

Desde ACNUR nos contaban que existen muy pocos programas educativos en los campos de refugiados, muchos son de corta duración y hay una gran falta de especialistas en ayuda psicosocial. Las aulas están abarrotadas con más de 200 alumnos, maestros que hablan otro idioma distinto al de los alumnos, falta de infraestructura entre otras, son algunas de las causas por las cuales muchos niños, o sus familias prefieren que estos trabajen a que aprender lo básico y lo que les permitiría tener un futuro más seguro o sólido.

Son escasas las organizaciones que se dedican tan sólo a proporcionar educación a niños y niñas durantes crisis humanitarias y situaciones de emergencia, por ello, en EveryWhere Schools tenemos el objetivo de promover el derecho a la educación en emergencias. Queremos garantizar una educación primaria de calidad a niños y niñas inmersos en dichos contextos, mediante programas y espacios educativos adaptados a sus necesidades, siendo la propia comunidad la encargada de llevarlo a cabo.
